IBEW 1141 Volunteers Help Provide Opportunity to Struggling OKC Families

Aug 31, 2016

Thousands of Oklahoma City metro residents attended a comprehensive health and wellness fair last Saturday at the State Fair Park sponsored by LOVE OKC, a community advocacy group that helps meet health and social service needs of area families.

The offerings to participants – which included basic wellness checkups, dental services, haircuts and more – also included a job fair, which featured IBEW JATC volunteers highlighting the benefits of skilled trades to curious attendees.

“We got some positive responses,” said Charlie Milner, who serves as dispatcher for Local 1141. Along with Brothers Scott Hammersberg, Mark McCraw and Carey Howard, Milner helped run the JATC’s career fair booth. “We got several comments from people who said they were happy we were there. A lot of people were pleased to see us.” Milner said that the Brothers received more than 20 applications from attendees who were interested in learning more about a career in the trades.

Marvin Stoll, one of the executive directors of LOVE OKC, said he appreciated the IBEW’s involvement. “I have never seen our career fair as busy as it was this year. Overall, this really is an amazing event.” Stoll and Brother Hammersberg are long-time acquaintances who have done faith-based service together in the greater Oklahoma City community.
